Pregnant woman, unborn child die after fall from hospital building

LAHAD DATU: A pregnant woman died after she fell from from the third floor of the Lahad Datu Hospital.

Despite efforts by hospital staff to save her pregnancy, her unborn child died in the womb.

District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Dzulbaharin Ismail said preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, who was 33 weeks pregnant, had been brought to the hospital's Emergency Department by her family after she displayed aggressive behaviour.

He added that the woman, in her twenties, was then admitted to a ward for further treatment and monitoring.

"The woman was restrained with her hands bound due to her aggressive behaviour. At 6.30pm yesterday, the restraints were removed after she was given a sedative and showed no signs of aggression," he said in a media statement today.

Dzulbaharin added that at 7.20pm on the same day, the nurse on duty noticed the woman was missing from her bed, conducted a check, and found her lying on the grass on the lower floor.

"The woman was rushed to the Emergency and Trauma Unit at Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatment.

"She subsequently underwent surgery to save the 33-week-old fetus, but the baby was confirmed dead in the womb.

"The woman was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was pronounced dead today.

"The body has been sent to the Forensic Unit at Lahad Datu Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

"Investigations are ongoing as a sudden death report (SDR)," he said.

Meanwhile, Dzulbaharin urged the local community not to speculate or make negative assumptions about the incident.
