KUALA LUMPUR: Mahkota assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain has died.
She was 63.
News of her passing was announced by Johor State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Puad Zarkashi in a posting on his Facebook just now.
Sharifah was reported to be in critical condition at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, Johor, due to internal bleeding.
It is learned that the two-term assemblyman was brought to hospital by her family on Tuesday night.
Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had visited Sharifah in hospital.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi also shared news of Sharifah's passing on his Facebook page.
Sharifah served as the Penawar assemblyman from May 2018 to March 2022 before being elected as the Mahkota representative on March 12, 2022.
She was also the Kluang Umno Women Division chief.
"I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Mahkota assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain.
"The death of Sharifah Azizah, affectionately known as Ummi, is indeed a great loss because she was a friendly, approachable and loveable leader.
"Her deeds and contributions to Johor, especially her constituency, Mahkota, will never be forgotten," he said.
Onn also expressed condolences to Sharifah's family and prayed that her soul would be placed among the righteous.
