SEREMBAN: Protests in several areas in the United Kingdom are becoming increasingly worrying and some have turned violent, says Foreign Minister.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan advised Malaysians residing in or visiting the UK to avoid protest areas and to register with the Malaysian High Commission in London for better safety arrangements.
"Malaysians are advised not to be in areas likely to be targets, and to stay in contact with the embassy so we can ensure they are safe," he said here today.
Mohamad said the current protests in European countries reflected a new pattern of far-right groups showing very low tolerance, and he hoped these incidents would not spread further.
He added that the spread of inaccurate information on social media is dangerous and creates additional problems for a country.
The ministry previously stated that Malaysians in need of consular assistance can contact the Malaysian High Commission in London at 45-46 Belgrave Square, London, the United Kingdom, or call +44 20 3931 6196 or +44 20 7235 8033, or email mwlondon@kln.gov.my.
It was reported that UK authorities were under pressure to end England's worst riots in 13 years following a stabbing incident on July 29 that resulted in the death of three children in Southport.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned far-right protesters on Sunday that they would "regret" participating in the riots, as disturbances linked to the murder of three children earlier this week flared across the country.
Masked protesters opposing immigration smashed several windows at a hotel in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, which has been accommodating asylum seekers.
The unrest, fuelled by misinformation about a mass stabbing in Southport last Monday, had spread to various towns and cities, leading to clashes between anti-immigration demonstrators and police.
