KUALA LUMPUR: A former nurse today claimed trial at the magistrates' court to a charge of cheating a woman by offering a baby to be made an adopted child.

Mahirah Mohd Yusof, 40, was accused of cheating N. Jay Letchumy Naidu, 38, who had handed over RM15,950 in stages at a house in Kepong Baru between Jan 20 and June 7.

She was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a minimum one-year jail term and up to 10 years and whipping, and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Hench Goh offered a RM6,000 bail in one surety.

In mitigation, lawyer Faris Ezani asked for minimal bail.

"My client is not working and supporting her four children. She is also diabetic and anaemic," he said.

The court allowed a RM6,500 bail in one surety and set Feb 13 for mention.

Lawyer Reenajit Kaur Golen held a watching brief on behalf of Jay Letchumy at the proceedings today.
