Ministry to review laws to address high motorcycle accidents

KEPALA BATAS: The Home Ministry will review laws and enhance awareness campaigns to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents.

Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry viewed the issue of high accident fatalities seriously.

He said motorcyclist deaths were a major contributor to accident statistics.

He said the meeting between Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim discussed motorcycle accidents.

He said fines for road offences totalled RM2.18 billion in the three-year period starting 2021.

"Police will relook basic measures, improve enforcement and intensify awareness campaigns.

"This will be discussed with Tan Sri (Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain) and the directors at Bukit Aman, as well as relevant departments," he said after the ministry's Sua Mesra programme here today.

Present were Razarudin and state police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.

On Tuesday, Anwar expressed concern over the high number of accidents involving motorcyclists, which he said was linked to weaknesses in traffic law enforcement and road maintenance issues.

He ordered for road safety awareness campaigns to be expanded as the number of road accidents reached 600,000 cases last year.

The majority of cases involved motorcyclists aged 18 to 35.
