'Kafir Harbi' issue: DAP trio lodge police report

KUALA LUMPUR: Three DAP leaders have lodged a police report against two people who used the term "kafir harbi" in reference to the party.

Syeikh Umar Bagharin Ali, Syahredzan Johan and Young Syefura Othman, who are DAP Central Executive Committee members, said the term "kafir harbi" damages the reputation of DAP's Muslim leaders.

The term refers to non-Muslims that oppose Islam.

Speaking to reporters outside the Dang Wangi police station, Young Syefura Othman who is also the Bentong member of Parliament, said the report was lodged against a person who used the term in a speech while campaigning for the Nenggiri by-election.

She also said the report also names a Melaka assemblyman who purportedly made a similar remark during campaigning.

The New Straits Times is attempting to reach the assemblyman for comment.

Young Syefura said she was concerned the issue could threaten their safety.

"What if I am out somewhere by myself and someone decides to act against me?

"This is very dangerous, although the term was used in a ceramah, they need to be held accountable for what they say," she said.

Syeikh Umar meanwhile said the use of the term "kafir harbi" was "extremely dangerous" as it could sow seeds of hatred.

"Using such terms does not only have implications on our party and its Muslim members but can also affect the racial harmony in our country," he said.

Previously, the DAP trio demanded an apology from the person who labelled DAP "kafir harbi" in a Perikatan Nasional ceramah.

Subsequently, the man, Zamri Zahari of Pas, apologised and retracted his remarks.

The Federal Territories Mufti's Office has said that the term "kafir harbi" cannot be applied to any non-Muslim citizens in the country.
