Malaysian Army showcases firepower in annual live-fire exercise

GEMAS: The Malaysian Army today conducted its annual firepower training exercise (Latihan Kuasa Tembakan or LKT 2024) as part of its efforts to strengthen national defence capabilities.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that these exercises are important as they not only test the army's readiness but also help develop competency.

"This exercise, held annually, is unique and distinct from the many other exercises we conduct, whether independently, in collaboration with other services, or bilaterally or multilaterally.

"It is indeed necessary and must be conducted, as it tests assets that are suitable for the nation's needs," Khaled told reporters after attending the exercise.

He emphasised that the defence requirements of a tropical nation with diverse terrains, like Malaysia, differ significantly from those of countries with desert landscapes. As such, the assets procured and showcased during the training are appropriate for the country's environment.

"We also need to ensure that, at all times, our personnel maintain a high level of competence, capability, and so on, and that is why we hold this exercise," he said.

Khaled also said the competence of personnel displayed during the exercise was satisfactory.

"However, from here, we can assess where improvements need to be made, where additional training is required, the level of competence, and what we need to consider in terms of the military assets we must acquire for the country.

"For example, as mentioned earlier, in warfare, we need more than one or two drones. We need to consider drones with long flight times and attack helicopters, which differ from those in the Air Force," he said, adding that the presence of key officials from the Defence Ministry, including its chief secretary, at the exercise is important.

This, Khaled said, provides exposure for the ministry to make improvements and progress to ensure the safety and security of the nation are at a satisfactory and good level.

Apart from showcasing firepower, LKT 2024 also focuses on using drones for reconnaissance and strike missions, improving the effectiveness of indirect fire with air support, and integrating ground operations with air support.

The exercise, which ran from Aug 4 to Aug 12, also tested the communication and coordination capabilities between different units in complex combat scenarios.

It included two segments: dynamic and indirect fire, featuring the PT-91M Pendekar main battle tank, AV-8 Gempita armoured vehicles, various artillery pieces, MD530G light scout/attack helicopters, and fighter jets from the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
