PUTRAJAYA: Civil servants have been told to reciprocate the call made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim by showing a higher level of commitment and providing the best service to the people and the country.
This call was made by the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public Service (Cuepacs) in response to the announcement of the Public Service Remuneration System, which will see civil servants getting salary increments of between 7 per cent and 15 per cent.
Its president Datuk Dr Adnan Mat also said the increment reflected the government's recognition of the role played by civil servants in the national development agenda.
"We (civil servants) have indeed provided excellent service, which is why the government has considered this salary increase," he said.
Earlier, Anwar in his speech at the 19th Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA) said salary increase would be ineffective if civil servants continued old habits.
He also said the government plans to enhance performance management, the code of conduct, and disciplinary procedures.
This includes disciplinary action against department heads who fail to report misconduct by their subordinates.
Commenting on this, Adnan said civil servants who are aware of these changes should promptly address any existing issues at their respective departments and workplaces.
On Anwar's announcement on changing the qualification requirement for civil servants to a minimum of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Adnan said Cuepacs has no issue with the change.
"Our education system has progressed, and people are receiving comprehensive education," he said.
