Korean convenience store CU touches down in Kota Baru

KOTA BARU: Popular Korean convenience store CU has opened its doors at UTC Kelantan, marking its first outlet in the state, and the third in the east coast.

The arrival of CU in Kota Baru offers the local community a chance to indulge in authentic, mouth-watering Korean cuisine.

From dopbap (Korean rice set) and dak gang jeong (Korean fried chicken) to tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes), CU offers a variety of delectable offerings. Other dishes include cheesy corn sausage infused with Korean flavours and mega XL gimbaps, stuffed with seafood or chicken fillings — exclusive to CU Malaysia.

Beyond offering Korean snacks and meals, CU also hopes to provide an authentic Korean convenience store experience, so customers can be whisked away to the vibrant, bustling streets of Seoul.

CU Malaysia director Blake Dang said the brand is focused on expanding its presence across the nation, especially on the east coast.

"CU's market presence is rapidly expanding across the east coast, driven by a robust demand for our authentic Korean food and drinks made with halal-certified ingredients," he said, adding that the brand aims to reach 200 stores nationwide by 2025.

The grand opening of CU at UTC Kelantan took place on Aug 15, and was officially opened by State Investment, Industry, Human Resources, Trade and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Datuk Md Anizam Ab. Rahman.

"This grand opening represents not just the expansion of our brand, but also our commitment to empower small Kelantanese businesses by providing them with a platform to sell their products in our stores. CU is committed to supporting local entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth within Kelantan," said Dang.

During the event, CU Malaysia also presented a financial allowance to the local community.

The 'Allowance That Allows' initiative aims to support 100 underprivileged students from Form 4 and above in Kelantan. A total of RM240,000 was distributed to ease the financial burden of these students, further reinforcing CU Malaysia's commitment to the local community.
