Teen motorcyclist with no driving licence killed in hit-and run accident

KULAI: A 16-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Taman Senai Jaya, Senai, early this morning.

The teenager, who did not have a valid licence, was riding his sister's motorcycle. He and the 14-year-old pillion rider were travelling from the Senai Jaya housing estate towards Taman Desa Idaman when the accident occurred at 4.30am.

The 14-year-old was severely injured.

District police chief Superintendent Tan Seng Lee said they are believed to have crashed into a lorry that suddenly swerved from the left to the right lane to make a U-turn.

The impact caused the rider to hit the road and he was killed on the spot, while the pillion rider was rushed to Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim Hospital.

Tan said the lorry driver fled the scene and has not yet lodged a police report.

He urged witnesses to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Ahmad Safuan Abu Naim, at 017-7573507.

Investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving are underway.

Tan said investigations revealed the victim was a school dropout, while the boy was still in school.

They were headed towards a nearby tuck shop, and the road was dark despite the presence of streetlights. Both were wearing crash helmets at the time of the accident.
