Bentong Prison products a hit among royal wedding revellers

KUANTAN: The Tenun exclusive exhibition booth featuring textiles and products made by Bentong Prison inmates is a hit among visitors at Tasek KotaSAS here.

Tasek KotaSAS is one of two locations where large screens were set up for the three-day wedding of Tengku Puteri Afzan Aminah Hafidzatullah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Fd Idzham Fd Iskandar.

Besides textiles, the booth also featured pouches, ties, wallets, coin boxes, wood products and cookies.

Mohd Hafiz Abd Aziz, the person in charge of the tenun workshop at Bentong Prison, said the booth's products were made by inmates from the vocational and industry unit.

"Inmates specialise in different skill, including weaving, pastry making and welding.

"They dedicate time and effort to learning new skills. The products they make are gaining recognition.

"It began with textiles a few years ago. Inmates now make many products.

"The cookies were made by female inmates using Tengku Ampuan Pahang's (Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah) recipes," he said at Tasek KotaSAS.

Hafiz said people often buy the booth's products to gift as souvenirs.

He said besides textiles, frozen currypuff and doughnuts were also in demand.

"Many people stop by our booth to ask about the products and how they're made. They rarely leave empty-handed."

The Tenun exclusive exhibition booth is among more than a dozen booths set up at the covered section by the lake.

The royal wedding will be broadcast live on the large screen.

The 'istiadat berinai' took place at 8pm today. The 'istiadat bersanding' is set for Sunday (Aug 25).
