Identities of charred accident victims in Kota Kinabalu confirmed

KOTA KINABALU: The identities of the two charred victims from a three-vehicle accident at the traffic lights near Kota Kinabalu International Airport early this morning have been confirmed.

Both victims are understood to be sisters in their 20s.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 2.35am.

The accident involved three vehicles: a Toyota Hilux, a Perodua Axia, and a Perodua Viva.

"Initial investigations at the scene revealed that the Toyota Hilux, driven by a local man in his 20s, was travelling from Tanjung Aru towards Putatan.

"Upon reaching the location, the Hilux, in the right lane, collided with the Perodua Axia carrying the two female victims, causing the car to spin into the middle lane before crashing into the right side of another vehicle, a Perodua Viva.

"As a result of the collision, the Perodua Axia skidded off the road near an overpass and caught fire," he said in a statement today.

Kasim added that both victims in the Perodua Axia were extracted by the fire brigade and pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from Queen Elizabeth I Hospital.

"Further investigation is ongoing, and the case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987."
