KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (KKCH) has developed a comprehensive long-term plan to address the city's critical rubbish problem.
The plan includes several strategies and will be implemented in phases, according to a statement from KKCH.
This follows a TikTok video posted on Nov 24, 2024, showing flotsam in the waters around Jesselton Point, a jetty for tourists heading to the islands, and the Anjung Senja food area."
City Hall has deployed personnel and boats to carry out the cleaning operations starting today.
City Hall will develop more rubbish collection centres for the water villages and island communities to facilitate disposal for residents, the statement added.
City Hall will also collaborate with various government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private companies, and educational institutions to conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of environmental cleanliness, responsible waste disposal, and reducing single-use plastics, it said.
"Activities such as seminars, workshops, and social media campaigns will be organised to educate the public about the harmful effects of rubbish on marine ecosystems," it added.
Additionally, it said that City Hall will utilise new technology and digital innovations to enhance the effectiveness of waste management and water area monitoring.
"Through the use of smartphone applications and digital platforms, data on the cleanliness levels of seas and rivers will be identified for quick action," it said.
City Hall urged full support from the community and private sector to ensure the success of the strategies outlined.
