Don't spread video of fatal m-cycle crash video, plead family

KOTA BARU: The family of a motorcyclist who was killed when his machine collided head-on with another on Sunday has urged the public to stop sharing a video of the incident.

Mohd Zaki Ibrahim, who is the cousin of the victim Muhammad Shafiq Mat Dam, said the video which showed Shafiq attempting to avoid smoke coming from a rubbish-burning site had gone viral.

"The family would like to appeal to the public to understand the feelings of the victim's family.

"We will leave it to the relevant authorities to investigate the viral video. Let this incident be a lesson to those who like to burn rubbish along the main road," said the 42-year-old when met at Kampung Pendek here today.

Zaki, who was among the first to arrive at the crash site, said Shafiq who suffered serious head injuries had already died when he arrived.

"I saw him lying next to his bike in a pool of blood. His helmet was thrown off due to the impact of the collision. The other motorcyclist, who was lying a few metres away from him, also suffered serious injuries," said Zaki.

The other motorcyclist, identified as Ismail Awang,79, also died in the accident.

Shafiq's brother-in-law Mohd Aminuddin Ejaz, 37, said Shafiq was returning home after meeting his friends when the crash occurred.

"The incident shocked us. However, after discussing with the family of the other victim, we have decided not to take any legal action," he added.

Shafiq's parents, Mat Dam Mahmud, 65, and Mariah Yakob, 63, said they had accepted his death as a fate.

"Kami redha (we have accepted). Ini adalah ujian dari Allah buat kami sekeluarga (this is a test from Allah for our family).

"Shafiq was our youngest child of five siblings. He was an obedient child and always respectful to the elders," said the nasi berlauk seller.

She said her son was buried at a village cemetery at Kampung Baung here after Asar prayers yesterday.

Kota Baru police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said both motorcyclists succumbed to head injuries and died on the spot in the accident that occurred at 5.40pm on Sunday at RBI Jaya Canopy, Jalan Salor-Pasir Mas.

Rosdi said an initial investigation showed the Yamaha Y15ZR, which Shafiq was riding, was heading to Kampung Pendek from Wakaf Che Yeh when the motorcycle skidded and entered the opposite lane before colliding head-on with a Honda Wave.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
