Johor MB on chemical pollution: Find the culprits now!

JOHOR BARU: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has demanded that immediate action be taken to identify those responsible for a series of chemical pollution incidents affecting several housing estates.

On a visit to the latest contamination site at Sungai Tebrau in Taman Kempas Heights, Onn Hafiz ordered that a task force be set up to tackle the problem.

His directive was stern: "Get the culprits now, and get to the bottom of this issue immediately".

Onn Hafiz also directed the relevant authorities to quickly assess the severity of the problem.

Over the past week, several estates in Johor Baru have been hit by chemical contamination.

Earlier, Onn Hafiz was captured on video asking for reports on the situation. When told it was not ready, he sternly replied, "I am here now, I want the report now. I am not here for a picnic!"

The Johor Environment Department and the Fire and Rescue Department's Hazmat Unit are investigating the source of the pollution.

Water samples from the affected areas are being analysed to identify the substances involved.

Initial findings revealed toxic chemicals in a nearby river, which posed a serious health risk. The pungent odour that hung in the air raised concerns among the residents.

Onn Hafiz called on the police and relevant agencies in the task force, to address the pollution and take strict action against the perpetrators.

He also urged industries, and the public, to help maintain the environment, to ensure public health and safety.

Meanwhile, state Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin confirmed that two schools – SK Kampung Maju Jaya and SMK Kampung Maju Jaya – were directed to close for the day.

This came after students experienced symptoms, including nausea, breathing difficulties, and dry throats.
