Mahkota polls: EC reminds candidates of regulations ahead of Saturday's nomination

KUALA LUMPUR: Prospective candidates for the Mahkota state by-election are advised to pre-check their nomination forms with the Returning Officer's office or the Johor State Election Office before filing them at the Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail in Kluang this Saturday.

Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak, in a statement today, said potential candidates must submit their nomination papers to the Returning Officer between 9am and 10am at the nomination centre.

"Candidates are advised to settle their deposits early, and ensure they bring the payment receipt on nomination day as proof of payment," he added.

Ikmalrudin said candidates representing political parties must submit an official letter authorising their use of the party's symbol when filing their nomination papers.

He said the use of any musical instruments or loudspeakers for the purpose of political propaganda by any means, including through the use of any type of vehicle, is not permitted on nomination day and is an offence under the Election Offences Act 1954.

Ikmalrudin said candidates who have paid the campaign material deposit are still bound by local authority regulations.

"The EC calls on all candidates and political parties to comply with the laws, rules, codes of conduct, and directives issued by the EC, the police and local authorities, ensuring a smooth and orderly nomination process," he said.

The Mahkota by-election on Sept 28 is being held following the passing of its incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah, 63, on Aug 2 while receiving treatment at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital (HEBHK) in Kluang.

Early voting is on Sept 24. — BERNAMA
