GEORGE TOWN: A PKR lawmaker has voiced frustration about weaknesses in the flood mitigation plan (RTB) for Bayan Baru and Batu Maung after two flash floods happened within a week recently.
Bayan Baru member of parliament Sim Tze Tzin today said he agreed with residents that Phase 1 of the Bayan Baru and Batu Maung RTB had weaknesses.
"I am also frustrated about the weaknesses. I will continue to ask the state government to improve the plan."
After the two flash floods, Sim had called for an urgent meeting about the plan today.
The meeting was chaired by state Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
Sim said the meeting had identified the weaknesses.
He said one of the main issues in Phase 1 was the relocation of utilities, such as Penang Water Supply Corp pipes, TNB cables and Internet cables, which was complex and costly.
He said the construction of culverts and large drains crossing major roads was also complicated and would cause congestion.
"These are problems faced by the government. I ask for everyone's patience as we are dealing with complex problems that cannot be solved overnight."
Meanwhile, he said the consultants present had provided a briefing on Phase 2 of the Bayan Baru RTB and Phase 2 of the Batu Maung RTB, aimed at addressing the shortcomings of Phase 1.
"After this meeting, we will proceed with the design process and allocation requests.
"Phase 2 will involve significant costs, and open tenders will also take time. Hopefully, Phase 2 will reduce floods."
