Don't dispute constitutional documents on Malaysia's formation, says Sarawak governor

KUCHING: The establishment of Malaysia in 1963 was based on constitutional documents that have already been enshrined in the Federal Constitution, Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said.

In his Malaysia Day message, Wan Junaidi said that, just as the historical facts of the Federation of Malaya achieving independence in 1957, there should not be any dispute regarding the constitutional documents.

He said the Memorandum of the Malaysian Solidarity Consultative Committee, Cobbold Commission Report, Inter-Governmental Committee Report (IGC Report), Malaysia Act 1963 (UK), Malaysia Act 1963 (Malaysia), Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Additional Agreement to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia 1963 are important because they are constitutional documents agreed to by all parties during the formation of the Federation of Malaysia that still exists today.

"Therefore, let us together raise Malaysia's aspirations through these historical facts.

"Let's not argue, destroy the harmony that has been built for so long," Wan Junaidi, a former federal law minister, said.

He reminded all that unity is the main pillar of Malaysia's continued progress.

Wan Junaidi added that efforts to integrate a society with multiple races, cultures and beliefs from various regions and backgrounds are not an easy task.

Wan Junaidi also called on all Malaysians to appreciate the history of the formation of the nation.

"The fact is that the amalgamation of the three regions namely Malaya, Sarawak, and Sabah through the MA63 have made Malaysia a larger and balanced prosperous country," he added.

Wan Junaidi also said all Malaysians should respect and appreciate the country's system of parliamentary democracy and the constitutional monarchy that was formed together with the Malaysian Constitution.

He said the system and the monarchy have witnessed the unity of the three regions.

The story of Malaysia's journey, he said, has been full of challenges and colours, noting that in six decades, the country had gone through various challenges and obstacles.
