KUALA KETIL: The appearance of a laid-back elderly man dressed in a traditional baju melayu, sarong, and turban riding the legendary Yamaha RxZ motorcycle has captured the attention of netizens on TikTok.
Photos and videos of Ismail Abdullah, 69, better known as Paksu Tomoi, riding the motorcycle were widely shared by social media users during the RXZ Members 6.0 gathering in Terengganu recently.
Sharing his story, Ismail said he joined the gathering on his nephew's motorcycle and said that he is comfortable in his attire, which has been his daily wear for the past 37 years, including for religious classes.
"I wear this kind of clothing every day. I feel more comfortable in a baju melayu and sarong, but I still wear long pants underneath the sarong.
"I rode that motorcycle myself from Kedah to Terengganu, and it took about 10 hours to get there because I made many stops to rest, eat, and pray.
"We rode in a group and maintained a normal speed, riding according to our comfort," he said.
"The Yamaha RXZ is about 20 years old, and this is my first time riding it to this gathering (RXZ Members). Previously, I rode my own Honda Raider motorcycle," he said.
According to him, he works in the village and teaches tomoi (a traditional martial art) in the area.
He says he had a passion for motorcycles since he was young. He has participated in the gathering six times, which has helped him connect with others who share the same interest.
"In Terengganu, everyone calls me 'atok' (grandfather), regardless of age, and I am used to that name. I'm just an ordinary person who goes there (to the RXZ Members gathering) with my own funds," he said.
Ismail says people should change perceptions about motorcycle riders, emphasising the importance of safety.
"Not all motorcycle riders are reckless. We shouldn't judge everyone based on the actions of a few. While riding is exhilarating, we must remember to pray," he urged.
"Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), many of us stop when it's time to pray. Prayer enriches our lives, so even amid the thrill of riding, it should never be forgotten. Young people must exercise discipline, follow the rules, and remain vigilant," he added.
Active in tomoi since the age of 17, Ismail affirmed that as long as he remains healthy and able, he plans to participate in next year's gathering, continuing to inspire those around him with his passion and dedication.
