PETALING JAYA: Zoo Negara has denied recent social media claims that its animals are neglected, starved, or appear weak.
The zoo's deputy president Datuk Rosly @ Rahmat Ahmat Lana said that the animals are well cared for, following strict health procedures, with oversight from veterinary experts and trained staff.
"That's not true. Visitors can see for themselves—our tigers aren't thin. Our animals are kept according to their species' needs, not as pets. They're on a controlled diet, and their health is closely monitored," he said.
Rosly added that Zoo Negara prevents animals from gaining excess weight to maintain their health.
"They have a set feeding schedule with controlled portions, as excess weight can harm them. Any unwell animal is monitored and treated daily."
The response follows a recent visit by an influencer who claimed the animals looked neglected, weak, and underweight, adding, "The tiger's stomach appears flat, while feeders seem to have larger bellies. Some animals look sick, and the aquariums are murky."
