Rat poop and roaches: 3 eateries shut in Penang

GEORGETOWN: Three eateries here have been shut for 14 days after Penang Island City Council (MBPP) officers found rat poop and cockroaches in their kitchens.

In a statement, the council said the restaurants were also compounded for other offences under MBPP's by-laws.

One eatery failed to produce evidence that its food handlers had undergone medical checkups.

Another restaurant failed to properly maintain its grease trap, while the final eatery stored raw food less than 20 cm from the ground.

"MBPP places great importance on the cleanliness of eateries," it said, adding this was not only important in ensuring the well-being of consumers but also in protecting the city's image as a tourist destination.

The council said the restaurant operators could appeal the order to close once they have complied with cleanliness requirements.
