ALOR STAR: A motorcyclist was killed after being crushed by an uprooted tree in Kampung Bandar Hilir, Sik district.
Sik police chief Deputy Superintendent Abdull Razak Osman said the 6pm incident occurred during a thunderstorm.
"About 6pm, several areas in Sik were hit by thunderstorms followed by heavy rainfall, causing a tree to be uprooted and crushing a motorcyclist.
"The victim has been identified as Mohd Rizal Aziz, 47, from Kampung Tanjung Besar," he said in a statement.
He added that the victim, a security guard with SK Jeniang, was heading home during the incident.
Meanwhile, Sik Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said rescuers rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at about 6pm.
"The victim was pronounced dead by Health Ministry emergency responders at the scene," Zulkhairi said in a statement.
In a separate incident, a 31-year-old man is feared drowned after he was swept away by a strong current while taking a dip in Sungai Sedim, Kulim.
Kulim Hi-Tech Park Fire and Rescue Station chief Azmir Hassan said nine rescuers were dispatched to the scene in Sedim picnic spot upon receiving a distress call at about 5.41pm.
"A search operation has been mounted to locate the victim through surface searching," he said in a statement.
It is learnt that the victim and friends from Penang were having a picnic at the site when he was swept away by the current.
