KUALA LUMPUR: The morning flash floods in the capital city, which left many motorists stranded, were triggered by 'extremely heavy rain' and the rising water level of Sungai Gombak.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the flash floods affected many areas, especially on the road leading to the parliament.
Dr Zaliha, however, said swift action from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) ensured that the water was drained from the area.
"Additionally, the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (Smart) system swiftly diverted water (away) from the city," she said in a press conference after attending the Wangsa Sari People's Housing Project (PPR) Digital Kitchen launch here.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif said DBKL placed two additional pumps in the flooded area on Jalan Parlimen.
"A pump has been in place at the area, and we have brought in two more water pumps," she said.
This morning, major roads in and around the city experienced flash floods following heavy downpours.
The Kuala Lumpur City Hall said the continuous rains in the morning led to rising water levels of Sungai Batu, Sungai Klang and Sungai Gombak.
It said the flash floods also affected roads around the city including Jalan Pantai Baharu, Jalan Parlimen (Bulatan Dato' Onn) and Jalan Kinabalu.
Some parliament members were stuck on flooded streets during the morning rush hour, forcing the Dewan Rakyat sitting to be delayed.
Other roads affected are Jalan Maharajalela, Jalan Travers, Jalan Damansara (under the Semantan overpass), Jalan Ledang, Jalan Segambut and Jalan Genting Klang (in front of the Shell petrol station and in front of UTAR).
