Sinkhole in Taman Seri Nibong prompts road closure, repairs begin [WATCH]

GEORGE TOWN: A sinkhole has appeared in Taman Seri Nibong here.

Fortunately, no one was injured. Residents discovered the sinkhole - big enough to fit a bus tyre - early this morning.

They raised the matter with Penang Gerakan Public Complaints Bureau chief Andrew Ooi.

He said residents plying the road daily feared for the safety.

"I contacted the Public Works Department and when I reached the scene, some officers were already on-site. Repair works are underway.

"I hope they will address this issue immediately for the safety of the people there," he told the New Straits Times.

Ooi urged the authorities to conduct proper investigation on the running soil underground and implement a mitigation plan to resolve the problem.

People are advised to avoid using the road turning into Taman Seri Nibong from Krystal Point as the road has been temporary closed to facilitate repair works.

The NST has reached out to state Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari for details and is awaiting his response.

Last month, a sinkhole appeared along Persiaran Gurney here.

The sinkhole occurred when a lorry loaded with bricks passed through a newly constructed sewage pipeline.
