LANGKAWI: The principal of St. Michael Secondary School in Penampang, Sabah, Jennifer Asing, won the 2024 Langkawi Award for Environmental Sustainability in the individual category.
Jennifer, 54, was recognised for her commitment to environmental sustainability and her promotion of green practices within her school and the local community.
She is also known for her active role in sharing her knowledge of conservation and environmental awareness through various national and international forums and symposiums over the past decade.
Under her leadership, St Michael has earned 12 recognitions from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR), all of which are related to environmental care and conservation.
As the recipient of this award, Jennifer took home RM50,000 in cash and a plaque.
The award was presented by the Raja Muda of Kedah, Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Sallehuddin, at the National Level 2024 National Environment Day Celebration Opening Ceremony here yesterday evening.
Also in attendance was Raja Puan Muda of Kedah, Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff.
Present were Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and the Kedah Public Works, Natural Resources, Water Supply and Environment Committee chairman Mohamad Yusoff @ Munir.
Jennifer said she was thrilled to receive the award, which served as a motivator for her to continue spreading environmental sustainability awareness to the community.
"This year, my school (St Michael) is expected to receive its 13th MBR recognition for the largest ginger planting project, following its 12th recognition two years ago for the most candles made from used cooking oil," she said.
At the event, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, was awarded the same prize in the organisation category for its extensive research and development (R&D) in environmental sustainability.
