Foreign worker dies in fall from gondola in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A foreign worker died after falling from the eighth floor while exiting from a gondola at a construction site in Bayan Lepas near here yesterday.

The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said the 26-year-old man died at the scene in the 8.30am incident due to severe injuries.

Prior to the incident, the victim was carrying out painting and plastering works.

"Preliminary investigations revealed the victim was a contractor carrying out the works.

"He fell from the eighth floor while attempting to jump from the gondola to the eighth-floor window, leading to him falling.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Following the incident, the Penang DOSH issued an immediate stop-work notice for the use of gondola for work at high places at the construction site until an investigation is completed," it said in a statement.

DOSH Penang said it would also direct the employer to conduct an internal investigation to identify the cause of the incident and implement improvements, to prevent a recurrence.

"Penang DOSH will carry out a follow-up investigation by obtaining relevant documents, recording statements from identified witnesses and conducting a site visit after improvement and prevention measures have been taken," he added.
