Mystery in Ipoh: RMAF denies sonic boom speculation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has clarified that no flights were conducted around Ipoh yesterday following reports of a loud bang and tremors in the area.

In a statement, RMAF denied speculation suggesting that foreign aircraft had breached the country's airspace.

"We urge everyone to refrain from speculation and to leave the investigation and identification of the true cause of the incident to the police," it stated.

On Monday, residents in several areas of Ipoh reported experiencing tremors accompanied by an explosion-like sound.

Social media users reported feeling the effects in Medan Istana, Tasek, Stadium Perak, Meru, Falim, Klebang, Manjoi, and Tanjung Rambutan.

Motorists on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) near the Menora Tunnel also reported similar incidents.

Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris had said that a check with the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force (GOF) revealed that there was no training related to explosions conducted yesterday.

He added that another check with the Land and Mines Office found that no explosion took place in the quarry areas.

Meanwhile, defence security analyst Zaki Salleh had suggested that the loud noise in Ipoh might have been a sonic boom, which occurs when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound, creating shock waves.
