KUALA LUMPUR: The mysterious loud noise recently heard in Ipoh was also reported by residents in nearby districts.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin said that the cause of the sound, which occurred at 11.06am on Oct 21, remained unidentified.
"We've received reports of the sound being heard in Kuala Kangsar, Gopeng, and Gerik as well," he said in a statement today.
Since the incident, the Perak police have conducted checks with various agencies, including the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force, the Land and Mines Office, and the Malaysian Meteorological Department, to explore potential explosions or seismic events as possible causes.
Further inquiries were made with the Minerals and Geoscience Department, the Royal Malaysian Air Force, local army bases, and quarry companies.
They also consulted the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA).
Razarudin urged the public to refrain from speculation that could cause unnecessary panic.
"We want to assure everyone that we are actively investigating this matter. Please allow us time to conduct a thorough inquiry, and we will update the media with any conclusive findings," he added.
Reports indicated that areas such as Medan Istana, Tasek, Stadium Perak, and others experienced tremors, with motorists on the North-South Expressway near the Menora Tunnel also reporting similar incidents.
Some suggested the noise might have been a sonic boom; however, both the RMAF and CAAM confirmed that there were no military flights over Ipoh at the time.
MYSA further clarified that the noise was not related to the Orionid meteor shower, despite social media claims.
