No military flights over Ipoh this morning: CAAM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) says there are no military overflights in Ipoh, Perak, this morning following reports of tremors and the sound of an explosion in the state capital.

"No reports from our station Ipoh (information on military overflights or exercises) that we know of," CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud briefly told the New Straits Times here today.

Earlier, Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said police received information about the incident at 11.06am.

He said checks with the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force (GOF) revealed that there was no training related to explosions conducted today.

Checks with the Land and Mines Office also found that no explosions took place in quarry areas scheduled before noon.

He also said the Malaysian Meteorological Department found no seismic activity in the Kinta district, even though an earthquake was reported in Halmahera, Indonesia, at 11.24am.

A defence analyst was reported as saying that the loud explosion heard in Ipoh today might have been from a sonic boom generated by an object moving through the air faster than the speed of sound.

However, he said that military protocols typically restrict supersonic flight to operations over water to minimise the impact on populated areas.

The New Straits Times had since reached out to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) for official updates regarding the matter.

This morning, it was reported that several areas in Ipoh town experienced tremors after residents heard the sound of an explosion.

Social media users reported feeling tremors in Medan Istana, Tasek, Stadium Perak, Meru, Falim, Klebang, Manjoi and Tanjung Rambutan.

Motorists travelling on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) near the Menora Tunnel also reported a similar experience.
