Elephant herd attacks four vehicles along East-West Highway

GERIK: A herd of wild elephants caused significant damage to four vehicles travelling along KM11 of the East-West Highway between Jeli and Gerik late last night.

Perak deputy police chief Deputy Commissioner Zulkafli Sariaat said the authorities received four reports on the incident which happened around 11pm.

"The drivers and their passengers were travelling from Jeli to Gerik when they encountered a group of elephants in the middle of the road.

"The vehicles stopped, hoping to avoid any conflict with the animals," he said in a statement.

"Shortly after, the herd began to disperse, but a few elephants approached the vehicles."

The elephants then brushed against and attacked the vehicles, including a Perodua Alza, Toyota Innova, Honda Jazz, and Proton Persona, before retreating into a nearby forest.

No injuries were reported, though the vehicles were damaged

"The Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has been notified of the incident for further investigation and action," he said.

Zulkafli urged road users travelling along the highway to exercise caution as wild animals frequently crossed the road, especially at night.
