DBKK: Disposal of 26,000kg of spoiled beef at landfill not harmful to environment

KOTA KINABALU: The disposal of 26,000kg of spoiled beef at the Kayu Madang landfill here is not harmful to the environment, according to Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) deputy director-general of operations Robert Lipon.

"The meat is organic, so it is not considered harmful to the environment.

"It also does not violate the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) monitoring requirements for Kayu Madang.

"Typically, expired food, such as milk, is allowed to be disposed of at Kayu Madang by burying it," he told reporters after a press conference on DBKK's smart parking initiative at a hotel here.

Yesterday, a company disclosed that it had discarded the bulk of the meat at the landfill and warned members of the public to be cautious if they came across unusually cheap beef in the market.

Robert said despite having round-the-clock security at the entrance, scavengers sometimes visited the landfill at night.

"There might be people digging it up, but I believe it's more for personal consumption rather than for sale."

Earlier, Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said the digital parking app now had about 60,000 users.

He said parking coupons could still be used until Nov 15.

The coupons can be exchanged for credits on the mobile app starting today.
