KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has been allocated RM163 million under the Digital Content Fund from 2014 to this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the funding was for supporting local animation, digital games, digital comics and creative technology content.

"To date, a total of 60 projects have been approved by MDEC, with a total funding amount of RM36.7 million allocated for the development of digital games, covering computer, console, and mobile platforms.

"All of these projects have successfully created over 700 job opportunities," he said in response to Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi).

Syahredzan had asked about local digital games (computer, video or mobile) that have received funding from MDEC since 2014.

Gobind said, among the local digital games that have received support from the Digital Content Fund by MDEC were Tiny Guardians by Kurechii Sdn Bhd, Re-Legend by Magnus Games Studio Sdn Bhd, No Straight Road by Metronomik Sdn Bhd, Rhythm Doctor by 7th Beat Games Sdn Bhd and Giga Bash by Passion Republic Games Sdn Bhd.

Gobind said the Malaysian digital gaming industry has recorded sales and exports amounting to RM45 million through the funding provided by the government.

"This demonstrates that the digital gaming industry in Malaysia has significant potential for growth, supported by government initiatives in market access, incubators, conferences, workshops, upskilling, reskilling programmes and more," he added.

He said, to enhance the promotion and marketing of local digital games, MDEC has also provided platforms and opportunities for companies to explore market access.

"Among the digital gaming markets frequently participated in are the Game Developers Conference in the United States, Tokyo Game Show in Japan, China Joy in China, Gamescom in Europe and others."
