No kidnap cases in Esszone since 2020, Dewan told

KUALA LUMPUR: There have been no kidnappings in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) since Jan 15, 2020, the Dewan Rakyat was informed today.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said this was due to initiatives carried out by the security forces.

He said that up to Aug 31, the Malaysian Maritime Sea Surveillance System had recorded 11,184 detections, 184 suspicious targets and 21 arrests.

"The data collected by the system is channeled to security assets operating in the area for action.

"We will continue our efforts to protect our security, and despite our successes, our readiness remains at the highest level."

He said this in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Awang Hashim (Perikatan Nasional-Pendang) during the Dewan Rakyat session.

Meanwhile, to the initial question from Datuk Shahelmey Yahya (Barisan Nasional-Putatan), Shamsul Anuar said the situation regarding security threats in Sabah was under control.

"The strategic position of Sabah, which borders the Philippines and Indonesia, presents security threats, such as smuggling of goods and weapons, entry of illegals, extremist groups and kidnapping for ransom.

"In this regard, the government — through the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) — remains committed to preserving sovereignty and boosting safety and public order Sabah."

The initiatives included Ops Sanggah, Ops Gasak and integrated operations, he added.

Other operations included: GROUND checkpoints in Kalabakan and Sapi Nangoh in Beluran to combat smuggling and illegal immigrants; and,

SEA checkpoints by enforcing regulations on the movement of unconventional vessels and fishing boats from neighbouring countries wishing to engage in barter trade or transshipment activities in Sabah and Labuan.

"Also, the Movement Control Order in Esszone's waters remains enforced in six districts: Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, and Beluran."
