JOHOR BARU: A Malaysian who was injured in a road accident in Singapore is now being treated in Johor.
Akif-Zarr Ukasyah, 28, who was in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore after the Oct 17 accident was brought back to Malaysia after members of the public rallied to raise funds for his S$110,537 (RM364,466) medical bill.
"Thank you to all Malaysians for your contributions and your prayers. My son is home and is now being treated at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA)," said Akif's mother, Ku Amazon Tuan Yusof.
She said they managed to raise nearly 50 per cent of Akif's total bill, while Muslim Care Malaysia an NGO, helped transfer Akif from NUH to HSA in their ambulance.
Ku Amazon said the remainder of her son's medical bill would be paid by his Singaporean employer.
She said doctors have told Akif, who sustained serious spinal injuries, a fractured left arm, and internal bleeding due to lung injuries, may take some time to walk again.
NUH doctors performed vital surgery on Akif's spine and were supposed to perform another two surgeries but were unable to do so due to his lung injuries and financial reasons.
"Many of his ribs were broken and pierced his lungs leading to internal bleeding," she said, adding that, fortunately, doctors were able to save him.
She hopes Akif, a food and beverage supervisor, will recover well so he can continue his treatment in their hometown of Kelantan.
