The victim was pronounced dead at 5.30pm while receiving treatment at the Papar Hospital's emergency unit.
The other rider, a 13-year-old boy, is receiving treatment at the same hospital.
District police chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said preliminary investigation showed the accident occured when the SUV, driven by a 50-year-old man, was about to make a right turn towards Masjid Jamek at 4.53pm.
"At that moment, as the driver was approaching Jalan Bukit Manggis Kampung Kelatuan to make a right turn, he suddenly heard two loud noises from behind.
"One motorcycle, ridden by the 16-year-old victim, collided with the front right side of the vehicle, while another motorcycle, a Honda ridden by the 13-year-old, hit the rear right side of the SUV."
"Both motorcyclists were rushed to Papar Hospital for treatment," Kamaruddin said in a statement today.
Kamaruddin added that the SUV driver and his passenger escaped the accident unharmed.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transports Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
