KUALA LUMPUR: Police are reminding motorists to be patient and courteous on the road during the Deepavali holidays.
Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said traffic was expected to surge to 2.62 million vehicles a day as Deepavali draws near.
"This data is based on projections from highway concessionaires.
"We have been told that PLUS Malaysia Bhd will activate smart lanes at 21 locations to reduce congestion on the highway," he said today.
He said traffic surges should be expected along routes heading to the east, north and south of the peninsula.
"We predict a significant increase in traffic along the west coast, too. This includes Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Johor.
"Our main objectives will be to ensure smooth traffic dispersal and road safety advocacy."
Yusri said 2,752 personnel would be deployed nationwide to ensure smooth traffic throughout the Deepavali festivities.
"We urge motorists to ensure their vehicles are well maintained and roadworthy. This includes heavy vehicles and commercial transportation."
He advised road users to always comply with traffic laws.
"Plan your journeys well and get enough rest.
"Always be aware of your surroundings. Keep updated with information from law enforcement agencies and highway operators."
