PORT DICKSON: A group of motorcyclists allegedly using the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH) as a "racing circuit" were caught off guard when police corner them on Saturday night.
The operation, conducted by the Negeri Sembilan Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, ran from 11pm to 5am and covered the stretch from Mambau Toll Plaza in Seremban to Sua Betong.
Its chief, Superintendent Muhammad Zaki Ramat, said none of the riders managed to escape, resulting in 454 summonses being issued following inspections.
"The special 'samseng jalanan' operation was carried out by the police in collaboration with other external agencies.
"We corner the group of motorcyclists from Mambau Toll Plaza heading towards Port Dickson, covering a distance of approximately 20 kilometres to Sua Betong," he said today.
Muhammad Zaki added that 215 motorcycles involving 225 individuals were inspected during the operation, and 21 motorcycles were impounded.
"Following the operation, 21 motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987. Additionally, 454 summonses and P22 Notices were issued for various traffic offences.
"The most common violations included improper registration plates (68), driving without a licence (85), road tax and insurance issues (60), missing side mirrors (38), missing chain covers (33), and modified exhausts (30)," he said.
Muhammad Zaki said that the highway has recently become a popular spot for teenagers and youths, particularly those from outside Negeri Sembilan, including the Klang Valley, to engage in illegal racing, contributing to accidents, some of which have been fatal.
"These individuals usually gather around Senawang, Seremban, before heading towards Port Dickson via SPDH. Most of them are from outside the state.
"We will not compromise with anyone involved in illegal street racing or 'mat rempit' activities. We will continue to conduct intensive operations to curb these activities from becoming widespread," he said.
