More raids planned as Immigration targets flats in crackdown on illegal immigrants

KUALA LANGAT: More operations are in the pipeline to weed out undocumented foreign nationals at hotspots identified nationwide.

Immigration Department deputy director-general (operations) Jafri Embok Taha said these operations included a number of flats where these "colonies" of foreigners were staying.

"We have a lot of hotspots in hand and we are now in the planning phase to ensure raids at these locations are effective.

"Cooperation with other agencies, including the National Security Council, police and local councils, is ongoing in our efforts to curb undocumented foreigners," he said after launching the new Kuala Langat Immigration office today.

He said such operations had been conducted numerous times, albeit on smaller scales compared with the one in Pandan Mewah yesterday.

"Such operations will never cease.

"The police have their list (of hotspots), and we have ours. We know exactly where they (undocumented migrants) are and are making arrangements to conduct more operations.

It was reported that public outcry over social issues linked to foreigners at Pandan Mewah Flats prompted a major interagency crackdown.

Immigration Department, Ampang Jaya police, National Registration Department and Ampang Jaya Municipal Council personnel raided the flats about 6pm on Tuesday following public complaints and media reports highlighting the matter.

Selangor Immigration Department director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said the raid followed public complaints of foreigners flocking to the area.

They checked more than 400 individuals and detained 119 for various offences.

Those detained comprised 71 men and 18 women from Myanmar, 14 Bangladeshi men, three men and a woman from Indonesia, eight Nepalese men and four Indian men.

Khairrul Aminus said they were also identifying and taking action against the owners who were renting out their units to the undocumented foreigners.
