Plantation workers stranded by submerged road rescued on foot in Maran

MARAN: Four plantation workers were left stranded by floodwaters at an oil palm plantation in Seri Makmur yesterday.

Heavy rain caused a nearby stream to overflow, flooding the plantation and blocking their path along the road.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said the workers were brought to safety during a rescue operation early today.

He added that the incident came to light after one of the victims alerted the Maran fire and rescue station for help at around 11.52pm yesterday.

"Eight firemen reached the plantation about 12.30am. Due to the slippery road, the team had to enter the site using a Toyota Hilux.

"The stretch was under one-metre water, forcing firemen to use a rope to reach the victims before bringing them out to safety by foot," he said in a statement today.

Zulfadli said the four workers were hired to plant tree saplings and were supposed to leave the plantation at 5pm yesterday but were trapped in the oil palm plantation area as the main exit road had been inundated with flood waters.

He said firemen did not deploy the fibreglass boat to reach out to the stranded victims due to the rapid water currents.

He added that the operation to rescue the affected workers ended at about 2.20am.
