184 evacuated as floods hit Johor following overnight rain

JOHOR BARU: A total of 184 flood victims from Tangkak and Segamat were evacuated to relief centres following heavy rainfall that started late last night and continued into the early morning.

In Segamat, two relief centres — Kampung Paya Lebar and Kampung Bukit Tunggal — sheltered 24 victims, while in Tangkak, the SK Bukit Rahmat relief centre accommodated 180 victims from 45 families in Kampung Parit Bengkok.

State Secretary and Johor Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani confirmed that 51 families from the two districts had been relocated to the centres by 4pm today.

Nine families from Kampung Parit Bengkok were also among those seeking shelter.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had earlier issued flood alerts for Segamat, Mersing, and Kota Tinggi.

At 9am today, Bukit Gambir Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Jahari Syukor said that an elderly man and four others were transported to the Tangkak relief centre.

He said that their personnel remained on standby to assist with evacuation efforts, should further relocation be required.

In Kluang, 10 flood victims from Kampung Contoh in Kahang were moved to a community hall as rising floodwaters inundated several homes.

The relocation was a precautionary measure, with the community hall serving as a transit point.

Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd advised the victims to relocate as their houses were submerged in rising floodwater, though roads leading to the village remained accessible to vehicles.

Meanwhile, two rivers — Sungai Tangkak in Kampung Sei Makmur and Sungai Muar in Kampung Awat — have reached dangerous levels, while six other rivers in the state are on alert.

Villages near Sungai Batu Pahat, Sungai Senggarang, Sungai Tebrau, and Sungai Muar are being closely monitored, with evacuation efforts on standby.

As of 4pm today, the flood situation in Johor remained under control, with no flood-related casualties reported.
