JOHOR BARU: Continuous heavy downpour in several districts in the state yesterday, led to flash floods, with Batu Pahat becoming the latest district to be affected.
Johor State Secretary and State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said a new temporary relief centre was opened this morning to accommodate Batu Pahat' flood victims.
The centre at SK Seri Bunut is housing 14 victims from two families.
He said 808 victims from 240 families were evacuated to the 10 centres in the affected districts namely Kluang, Pontian, and Batu Pahat.
Kluang has the highest number of evacuees, with 674 victims from 199 families who sought shelter at six centres since yesterday.
Yesterday, the News Straits Times reported that 116 victims sought relief at two centres.
In Pontian, 120 people from 39 families have been relocated to SK Seri Anom, which opened last night at 8.30pm.
The Irrigation and Drainage Department recorded warning water levels at Sungai Benut in Simpang Renggam, which was at 6.18 metres.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms in Batu Pahat, Tangkak, and Muar later today.
