ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor is set to host a world-class sports facility with the upcoming opening of a Khabib gymnasium, as an agreement was finalised today in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Johor State Sports Council and former UFC Lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the initiative follows the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim's directive.
"It is also state's efforts to enhance youth development through sports. The partnership reflects Johor's commitment to advancing sports infrastructure and nurturing young talent.
"It is a significant milestone for the state," said Onn Hafiz who witnessed the signing ceremony said.
Earlier, a state delegation led by the menteri besar toured Khabib's facility in Abu Dhabi, which featured cutting-edge amenities, including an MMA octagon, specialised zones for martial arts such as Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and wrestling, as well as a fully equipped cardio and weightlifting areas.
The gym also includes recovery facilities such as saunas and swimming pools.
Onn Hafiz said the upcoming Khabib Gym in Johor would be built in two identified locations in Iskandar Puteri here, and will replicate the standards set by the Russian Mixed Marital Art fighter.
"It will position Johor as a hub for martial arts and fitness, which will benefit local youths, particularly in developing the state's sports talent on a global scale.
"The collaboration aligns with the state's vision of fostering a healthier, more competitive community.
"The gym is not just about physical fitness; it's about building discipline, resilience, and a sense of purpose among Johor's youth.
"With the support of the Regent of Johor, the Khabib Gym project is expected to bring international recognition to the state while contributing to the development of sports facilities and programs that benefit all Johoreans," he told the New Straits Times, today.
