More than 10,000 chickens killed in dawn fire

KUCHING: Firefighters battled a pre-dawn blaze at a poultry farm on the outskirts of the city, with over 10,000 chickens perishing in the 3am fire.

Due to a lack of nearby water sources, they had to shuttle water from a hydrant one kilometre away.

The fire department said it took 19 firefighters from two stations, Petra Jaya and Batu Lintang, nearly an hour to bring the fire under control at the Mile 8 Jalan Matang farm.

Another six hours were required to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

The fire completely destroyed the 128x14 metre chicken barn, it said.

The blaze was "contained" at 4.42am, and the fire was completely put off 11am.
