Last remaining flood centre in Kedah shuts down, 243 evacuees return home

ALOR STAR: The last remaining temporary flood relief centre (PPS) in Kedah has ceased operation today after the latest floods that started on Nov 28.

According to an update by the State Floods Disaster Management Committee secretariat, the PPS at SK Sri Gunung officially ceased its operation at 2.30pm today, after all 243 evacuees from 60 families were allowed to return home.

Seven districts in the state were ravaged by another round of severe flooding on Nov 28, following a two-day unusual continuous heavy rainfall.

On Wednesday, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was reported as saying, based on data gathered by the Disaster Operations Control Centre (PKOB), 11,046 people from 3,575 households were evacuated to PPS across the affected districts during the peak of the recent floods.

He said the floods were caused by unusually heavy rainfall that exceeded twice the annual average, increasing from 175mm to over 300mm.

Following the devastating disaster – the second to hit the state since September, Sanusi has expressed his hope that the federal government will consider providing assistance to Kedah in repairing extensive damage to infrastructure in the state.

On Sunday, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said 19 schools in Kedah were affected by floods, with several operating through home-based teaching and learning (PdPR).

She was reported as saying that the total cost of the damage sustained by schools affected by the recent floods nationwide was still being assessed, adding that funds for disaster-hit schools are available, but accurate data was needed to address the situation effectively.

On Friday, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan announced that the Finance Ministry would channel allocation to the Education Ministry to speed up repair works in schools ravaged by the recent floods.
