BUTTERWORTH: The Works Ministry estimates that RM312.1 million will be required to repair roads damaged by the first wave of the northeast monsoon floods.
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said RM247 million would be for the maintenance of federal roads, RM40.3 million for slope repair on federal roads and RM24.8 million for state roads.
The figures may increase.
"We are still assessing the damage and repair costs. The figures are expected to be finalised soon," he told the media after the launch of the 2024 National Technical Profession Day at PICCA Convention Centre here today.
Present were his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, and state Works Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
Kedah, Pahang, Kelantan, Johor, Melaka, Negri Semblian, Perak, Terengganu and Perlis were affected by the floods, with more than 143,000 people displaced.
Heavy rain and floods are an annual occurrence in the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand from November to January.
Alexander said the ministry had mobilised the Madani flood relief mission teams to several flood-affected areas in the current second wave of floods.
The mission was launched in Putrajaya last week.
"We did the same during the first wave. Based on previous experiences, we are better prepared to face the floods this time around."
