KUCHING: The Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has prohibited the transportation of live pigs without any movement permit following the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mongkos, Serian Division, late last month.
Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said strict measures, including the transportation of live pigs, have been taken to prevent the virus from spreading to other pig farms.
He urged pig farmers to enhance biosecurity at their farms by establishing vehicle dips, foot dips, and secure perimeter fencing,"
"Farmers must control the movement of livestock, vehicles, and individuals entering and leaving their farms," he said in a statement.
He emphasised that ASF has no cure or vaccine and can lead to severe economic losses if not controlled.
He said ASF has a high mortality, with pigs which contracted it showing symptoms such as fever, breathing difficulties, skin discolouration, lethargy and nasal discharge.
Rundi urged farmers to report any suspected cases to the nearest DVS office immediately.
He also denied a viral video linked to Sarawak which allegedly showed footage of an ASF outbreak, which he said actually originated outside the country.
He assured the public that Sarawak's pork supply remains sufficient and safe for consumption, especially during the upcoming Christmas celebrations where pork products are widely available across the state.
