SWCorp clears 12,852 tonnes of flood waste

ALOR STAR: A total of 12,852.18 tonnes of flood waste has been cleared by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) from Nov 28 to Dec 11.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the effort covered 45 locations affected by floods in seven states.

She said 153 units of machinery were deployed, supported by 362 workers.

"Clean-up operations in the seven states under Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) are enforced through SWCorp in collaboration with concessionaire partners.

"Kedah and Pahang are the most affected states, but although Kelantan was not initially on the list, we extended assistance to Tumpat," she said after visiting post-flood clean-up efforts at Taman Aman here today.

In Kedah, she said, operations that began on Nov 30 collected 730.03 tonnes of waste, which was transported to the Jabi landfill in Pokok Sena.

"At temporary flood relief centres (PPS) across 58 locations statewide, SWCorp directed concessionaire Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd to provide 171 bins, including 71 units of 1,100-litre bins, 95 units of 240-litre bins, two 660-litre bins, and three Roro bins, with daily collection," she added.
