KOTA BARU: A stretch of nearly 50m of Sungai Kelantan, located behind an apartment building and hotel on Jalan Pos Office Lama, collapsed this morning, causing concern among operators of nearby business premises.
No casualties were reported in the 10am incident, which is believed to have been caused by the impact of the recent floods in the state.
The erosion and landslide also nearly affected several business premises located near the site. The business premises include an apartment, a restaurant, and a cafe.
Che Abdullah Che Muhamod said he immediately rushed to the scene after being informed about the incident.
"I arrived here around noon and saw the soil erosion and landslide occured along the riverbank.
"I was informed that police already arrived at the scene to investigate the case," said the 69-year-old former bank officer.
Former government servant Samsudin Yasin said he and his 65-year-old wife, Che Zawiah Che Hamat, would come to the place every morning for jogging.
"I believe the soil erosion and the landslide occurred after it was hit by the strong river current recently," said the 70-year-old when met at the scene today.
Meanwhile, Kota Baru police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said police received a report on the incident at about 1pm.
"Investigations into the incident will be carried out by the state Public Works Department," he added.
