PUTRAJAYA: Preparations are nearing completion for the Proton e.Mas 7 to serve as Malaysia's official car during its Asean chairmanship next year.
Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad confirmed that while the Proton e.Mas 7 would be the official car for Malaysia's Asean chairmanship, other electric vehicle (EV) brands would also be used.
"Preparations for the Proton e.Mas 7 as the official car for Asean are in their final stages, as Malaysia will officially assume the chairmanship in January, with meetings set to begin," he said at a press conference following the handover of guidelines on the transition of government vehicles to EVs today.
"However, other EVs from various brands will be used at different levels, including by heads of state, heads of government, ministers, and government officials, based on specific demands and needs. The Proton e.Mas 7 will serve as the official car for Asean and will be utilised at certain levels," he added.
Nik Nazmi said this when asked about the readiness of the Proton e.Mas 7 to serve as the official car for Malaysia's Asean chairmanship, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.
The Proton e.Mas 7 made its debut during the 2024 National Day parade, showcasing Proton's evolution as a national carmaker over its 41-year history.
Anwar yesterday said Malaysia aims to set an example in the region, not only by showcasing the ability to produce cars but also through the development of EVs.
The prime minister said that Proton, as a national car manufacturer, should leverage its role in the local automotive industry and the EV project.
