Sabah CM: Infrastructure and utilities key to RMK-13 success

KOTA KINABALU: Basic infrastructure and utilities are key development priorities for Sabah under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13), says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said that the provision of essential utilities like clean water and reliable electricity, particularly in rural areas, was crucial for enhancing quality of life, stimulating economic growth, and attracting investment.

"This is vital for fostering a sustainable socio-economic environment in Sabah," he said during the RMK-13 Sabah State Engagement Session with the Federal Ministry of Economy, held at a hotel here.

The speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister II and Minister of Public Works, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, in the presence of Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.

Hajiji acknowledged the significant development gap between urban and rural areas in Sabah, calling it a challenge that must be tackled collectively.

Reaffirming the state government's commitment to balanced development, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their location, benefit from growth initiatives, he also expressed hope that the Federal Government's efforts to bridge this gap, as outlined in RMK-12, would continue and be further strengthened under RMK-13.

With ongoing collaboration between the Federal and State Governments, Hajiji expressed confidence that all Sabahans would enjoy equal opportunities for progress and improved well-being.

He said Sabah was the sixth-largest contributor to Malaysia's GDP in 2023, with a contribution of RM83.2 billion, or 5.3 per cent of the national GDP.

"With its vast economic potential and resources, Sabah is well-positioned to further enhance its economic performance and make a more significant contribution to the national economy," he added.
